Happy Friday!

Hello Everyone!

It was my pleasure this week to meet with parents from Grade Five and Six! If you were unable to meet with me this week and would like too, feel free to stop by my classroom anytime between 3:10 and 4:00 PM, or arrange an appointment through the school office.

Grade Six parents; I am beginning the process of organizing the Grade Six Graduation field trip.  We are going to do a similar trip to last year to Fuxing Adventure Center in Hsinchu County where In Motion Asia will facilitate an adventure program for us.  Please click here to see photos from last year's trip to get an idea of the type of program we will be doing.  When the plans for this year's trip have been finalized a letter will be sent home  explaining all the relevant details.

This week in Grade Five we read the new selection "The Fear Place" and responded to the Think About the Selection questions.  The Grade Fives did mini lessons on the suffixes -ous, -ward, the phonics sounds /or/ar/air/, helping verbs and main verbs, linking verbs, and forms of the verb to be.  Next week on Tuesday we will have a skills test covering these points.  In Social Studies we began looking at Slavery in the Southern Colonies.

In the Sixth Grade we read the new selection "Last Summer with Maizon" and looked at the new vocabulary.  Grade Sixes learned about and practiced making inferences, reviewed vocabulary with -ed and -ing endings, and wrote a Language Arts Skills test on Wednesday.  Grade Six students finished up their problem - solution paragraph, and have written a first draft of a descriptive essay.  In Social Studies we looked at life in Egypt, in particular the Egyptian death ritual.  Grade Six students got to embalm an Egyptian noble!

Ways you can help your Student:

Grade Five

  • Check in that they have answered their Think About the Selection questions on page 202 of their Reading text.  Ensure that they have answered in complete sentences.
  • We will have a skills test next Tuesday in Language Arts.  Have them review making predictions, suffixes -ward, and -ous, the three /ar/ sounds, homophones, main/helping verbs,  and linking verbs,
  • Read twenty minutes a day in English from a novel of your choice.
Grade Six
  • Check in that they have answered their Think About the Selection questions on page 292 of their Reading text.  Ensure that they have answered in complete sentences.
  • Vocabulary test on Monday.  See the list here.
  • Have your son or daughter read aloud their first draft of their descriptive essay, and help them revise the text for errors.
  • Read twenty minutes a day in English from a novel of your choice.
Have a great weekend!
