Hello Everyone!


Hello Everyone!

We have had a great first full week in Grade Five!  We are beginning to get to know each other in the Fifth Grade, and we are establishing our routines and getting down to some seriously exciting learning!

This week we continued with Place Value in Math, in Language Arts we continued our theme Nature’s Fury by reading Earthquake Terror; in Social studies we have begun a preview of Unit 1. In Science we reviewed The Inquiry Process. If you would like to preview anything with your son or daughter, we will be doing the following next week:

Math
  • Lesson 7: Compare, Order, and Round Decimals
  • Chapter 1 Review
  • Chapter 2: L1: Expressions and Addition Properties
  • Lesson 2: Estimate Sums and Differences
  • Chapter One Test: Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimals

Language Arts
  • Vocabulary Test Monday – see list here.
  • Reading:  Realistic fiction; story details: similes; Science Link: El Nino
  • Language Arts: Skills Test Wednesday:  Sequence of Events, base words, short vowels, using a thesaurus, kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates
  • Grammar:  Review: Subjects and Predicates, Compound Subjects and Compound Predicates
  • Writing: Writing a news article continued.
Social Studies
  • Unit 1 Chapter 1: People and Geography
  • Finding Locations
Science
  • Unit 1 Cells
Ways you can help your child this weekend:
  • Ask to read their journal response on our read aloud “Wringer”.
  • Review Chapter One in Math – Test on Friday  
  • Review vocabulary words for vocabulary test on Monday.
  • Review for the Skills test on Wednesday
  • Encourage your child to read at least twenty minutes a day in English.
  • Go outside and play!
