Hello All!

Hello Everyone!

This week in Math we have been working on Chapter 9: Number Theory and Fraction Concepts.     In Language Arts this week we have analyzed the story structure of the selection La Bamba, and we have begun the pre-writing process for a personal essay.  In Social Studies the Grade Fives have been assigned an oral presentation on a historical figure that was important to the resistance of slavery in the American South.  They will begin presentations next Tuesday.   In Science we have continued with Chapter Six: The Earth’s Changing Surface, and we have looked at both terrestrial and sea floor features of the Earth’s surface.  If you would like to preview anything with your son or daughter, we will be doing the following next week:

Math:
  • Lesson 9.6: Equivalent Fractions and Simplest Forms
  • Lesson 9.7: Problem Solving Strategy:  Use Logical Reasoning
  • Lesson 9.8: Related Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Decimals
  • Lesson 9.9: Compare and Order Fractions and Decimals
  • Chapter Review

Language Arts
  • New Selection: The Fear Place
  • Writing: Personal Essay
  • Spelling/ Vocabulary Test:  La Bamba

Social Studies
  • Presentations:  A Historical Figure in Slavery

Science
  • Chapter Six:  The Earth’s Changing Surface: Lessons 2 and 3

Ways you can help your child this weekend:

  • Make sure that your son/daughter is prepared for their oral presentation.  They must have their speech memorized, but they may have cue cards to help.  Remind them to make eye contact with their audience, and to speak in a loud clear voice.  Also please make sure that their PowerPoint presentation does not include the text of the speech.  It is only meant to have images and headings to enhance their presentation.
·         Review vocabulary and spelling words.
  • Encourage your son or daughter to read twenty minutes a day in English.

A friendly reminder to everyone that class starts at H.I.S. at 8:20 AM.  Students should arrive before 8:20 AM so they have time to unpack their bags and be ready to learn at 8:20 AM.

Have a great weekend,

Patrick Holt
