Spirit Week is upon us!

Hello Everyone!

Next week is Spirit Week!  Please have a look at the poster embed on the sidebar of the blog for details.  On Wednesday, Mr. Burt will be hosting Race Day on the track.  The Grade Five class colour on Wednesday will be purple, so please support H.I.S. school spirit by ensuring your child is dressed in our class colour.  The Fifth Grade races will be held at 2:00 PM.  We encourage parents to come out and cheer on the racers, and at the end of the day take on the teachers on the soccer field!

This week in Math we wrote our Chapter 11 Test, and the results went home to be signed on Thursday. This week we have started working on Chapter 12: Multiply and Divide Fractions.  In Language Arts this week we did not do our theme test.  I decided that in the interest of time, I will use the results from the smaller assessments in the theme to give students a grade for the Unit.  This week in Language Arts we began a new story called A Boy Called Slow.  We learned new vocabulary, and worked on the reading strategy Drawing Conclusions.  In Science students are working on a digital poster project about Volcanoes using an online application called GlogsterEDU.  In Social Studies students wrote a summary about Chapter 4 Lesson 1, and learned about how to read and create a Cultural Map. If you would like to preview anything with your son or daughter, we will be doing the following next week:

Math:
  • Lesson 12.4: Model Division
  • Lesson 12.5:  Divide Fractions
  • Lesson 12.6: Divide Mixed Numbers
  • Lesson 12.7: Problem Solving Decision: Choose the Operation
  • Lesson 12 Chapter Review

Language Arts
  • A Boy Called Slow:  Comprehension
  • Vocabulary Test on Friday
Social Studies
  • Chapter 4: Moving West Ward
Science
·         Chapter 8:  Using Resources Wisely: Lesson 1

Ways you can help your child over the weekend:

  • Review A Boy Called Slow Vocabulary.  See slide show here.
  • Encourage your son or daughter to read twenty minutes a day in English.
A friendly reminder to everyone that class starts at H.I.S. at 8:20 AM.  Students should arrive before 8:20 AM so they have time to unpack their bags and be ready to learn at 8:20 AM.

Have a great weekend,

Patrick Holt
